Before America entered WWII he resigned his USAAF commission to be a Flight Leader in one of the most famous combat fighter squadrons in history, the all-volunteer Flying Tigers. Based in China, these American pilots flew the famous shark-toothed P-40 Tomahawk fighter with Chinese markings (note the "foreign" uniform worn in his photo). The Tigers were disbanded in 1942, McMillan re-joined the USAAF and became The Citadel's 1st "Ace" totaling 8.5 documented "kills" as a "Tiger" pilot and USAAF pilot before being shot down/KIA over Pingsing, China 24 Jun 1944. He was of a special breed, and a true national hero. Buried in Arlington National Cemetary. More pictures available at Citadel History.
